You were told your concussion would heal on its own. Rest, avoid screens, take it easy for a couple of weeks. Weeks turned into months, and the headaches, brain fog, and dizziness are still there. If this sounds familiar, you may be dealing with post-concussion syndrome, and you are not alone.
Post-concussion syndrome (PCS) affects an estimated 10 to 30 percent of concussion patients. Symptoms persist well beyond the expected two-to-four-week recovery window, sometimes lasting months or years. The challenge is that standard medical testing,MRIs, CT scans, blood work, often comes back normal, leaving patients without answers.
Why Some Concussions Do Not Heal on Their Own
A concussion disrupts the normal function of brain pathways. In most cases, the brain's natural healing processes resolve this disruption within a few weeks. But when specific neurological systems sustain more significant functional damage, vestibular pathways, oculomotor circuits, autonomic regulation centers, or cognitive processing networks, rest alone is not enough.
The brain needs targeted stimulation to rebuild those pathways. Without it, the dysfunction becomes self-perpetuating. Your vestibular system stays impaired, so you stay dizzy. Your oculomotor system stays disrupted, so reading gives you headaches. Your autonomic system stays dysregulated, so your heart races when you stand up.
What Functional Neurology Offers That Standard Care Does Not
Functional neurology evaluates the brain and nervous system at a level of detail that most standard examinations do not reach. Instead of asking whether there is structural damage visible on imaging, we ask which functional pathways are impaired and what specific rehabilitation exercises can restore them.
A functional neurology evaluation for post-concussion syndrome includes:
- Vestibular function testing, assessing the inner ear and balance pathways
- Oculomotor evaluation, testing eye movement control and visual processing
- Cognitive processing assessment, measuring attention, processing speed, and memory
- Autonomic function testing, evaluating heart rate and blood pressure responses
- Cervical spine examination, checking for neck injuries that commonly accompany head trauma
A Targeted Rehabilitation Approach
Once we identify which systems are impaired, treatment is specific. Vestibular rehab for dizziness and balance problems. Oculomotor training for visual processing and reading difficulties. Neurocognitive exercises for brain fog and attention deficits. Cervical spine treatment for neck-related headaches and stiffness.
Each patient receives a rehabilitation plan built around their specific pattern of dysfunction. We reassess at regular intervals to confirm progress and adjust the program as your brain function improves.
When to Seek Help
If your concussion symptoms have lasted longer than four weeks, or if you were told you should be better by now but you are not, consider a functional neurology evaluation. Post-concussion syndrome responds well to targeted rehabilitation, but the dysfunction does not resolve on its own.
